NEB BOYS: Late Rally Lifts Creighton Prep Past Millard West, 8-7
March 22nd, 2009
Junior middie Billy Dineen scored the game-winning goal with 1:25 remaining to lead unbeaten Creighton Prep to a thrilling, 8-7 victory over Millard West in a Nebraska High School Lacrosse Association game Saturday.
Dineen scored a game-high six goals, the last of which capped a big rally in which the Junior Jays (5-0) erased a four-goal, second half deficit.
Senior attackman Stephen Tarr added four points on a goal and three assists, and senior middie Will Jurgenson scored once to help Creighton Prep extend its winning streak to 12 games.
Millard West fell to 1-1.
Millard West led 4-1 at the end of the first quarter, 6-2 at halftime and 7-5 going into the fourth quarter. But the defending state champion Junior Jays rallied in the final 12 minutes.
Jurgenson brought Creighton Prep within a goal when he scored with 7:15 remaining in regulation, and Dineen took it from there. Dineen scored the equalizer with 5:15 to play and then the go-ahead goal nearly four minutes later.
Creighton Prep won the face-off after Dineen’s last goal, and Millard West never had another good shot at tying it.
“Prep-Millard West Is always a dogfight,” said Creighton Prep head coach Steve Haney, whose team also beat Papillion LaVista, 13-1 on Saturday.
“At halftime, I was talking about how we had to settle down, because we were rushing things too much. As soon as we started passing the ball around again, we got a little lucky and put some shots in the goal.”
