ORE GIRLS: Late Goal Lifts Wilson Past Oregon City, 11-10

March 16th, 2010

Junior middie Gaela Dennison-Leonard scored her only goal with 10 seconds remaining in regulation to lift Wilson to a thrilling, 11-10 victory over Oregon City in an Oregon Girls Lacrosse Association game Monday night.

Dennison-Leonard fired home a bounce-shot from eight yards on a free-position opportunity to give the Trojans (1-0) a huge win in their season opener.

Senior middie Emily Zweber and junior middie Fiona Dearth each scored a co-game-high four goals to lead the Wilson offense. Senior attack Morgan Leonard and senior middie KK McCaslin each added a goal and an assist, and junior middie Alida Beck dished a pair of assists to round out the offense for Wilson.

In defeat, junior middie Holly Cisneros finished with a game-high five points on two goals and three assists, and junior middie Shelly Bohrer had four points on three goals and one assist for the defending state-champion Pioneers (0-1), who lost their season opener and had their 18-game winning streak against Oregon competition snapped.

The defeat was Oregon City’s first to an in-state opponent since it lost the 2008 state championship game to St. Mary’s.

Wilson led 6-4 at halftime, and the Trojans were ahead, 10-8, late in the second half before Oregon City fought back. The Pioneers drew level in the final minute of regulation when Cisneros scored with 41 seconds remaining.

But Oregon City couldn’t hold on for overtime, as Wilson got the decisive goal from the unlikeliest of sources.

“We played our hearts out,” Wilson head coach Sarah Bromley said. “Oregon City played a great game. I think we had a few standout players. Emily Zweber really stepped up, as did Fiona Dearth. And Gaela’s game-winning goal was memorable.”
