AZ GIRLS: Last-Minute Goal Lifts Corona del Sol Past Xavier

March 3rd, 2010

Junior middie Kim Dorman scored the game-winning goal with 45 seconds remaining to give Corona del Sol a 9-8 victory over Xavier in an Arizona Girls Lacrosse Association Division I game Tuesday night.

Dorman took a feed from freshman attack Caitlin O’Grady and fired home a low shot from four yards to send the Aztecs (1-1) to their first win of the season and give first-year head coach Sharon Lee her first victory. It was Dorman’s only goal of the game.

O’Grady finished with a team-high five points on three goals and two assists, senior middie Brittnay Haley had four points on three goals and one assist and freshman middie Holly Berns and senior middie Elyse Braun each added a goal and an assist for Corona del Sol.

Xavier (2-1) had its season-opening, two-game winning streak snapped.

Corona del Sol got off to a fast start, racing to a 6-1 lead in the first half. Xavier closed to within 6-2 at halftime and then stormed back in the second half. But Corona del Sol maintained its composure enough to pull out a win in the end.

“It was a very close game,” Lee said. “The girls got aggressive on ground balls, and it was the ground balls that won it.”
