ORE BOYS: Lakeridge Edges Portland Jesuit in 2OT Thriller

March 17th, 2010

Junior attackman Michael Hoch scored the game-winning goal with 2:10 remaining in double-overtime to give Lakeridge a thrilling, 12-11 victory over Portland Jesuit in an Oregon High School Lacrosse Association game Tuesday night.

Hoch scored his only goal of the night with a low shot from just off the crease after taking a feed from senior attackman Brandon Blackmore to give the Pacers (1-0) a win in their season opener.

Blackmore finished with a team-high five points on four goals and one assist, and senior middie Drew Dutton added three points on two goals and an assist for Lakeridge. Senior attackman Benton Souers and senior middie Drew Booker each scored twice, and junior middie David Swanson had a goal and an assist to round out the offense.

Defensively, senior goalie Warren Nielsen saved 12 shots.

In defeat, attackman Justin Pfeffer scored a game-high six goals for Portland Jesuit (0-4), which lost its fourth straight to start the season.

Portland Jesuit led 4-2 at the end of the first quarter and 5-3 at halftime, but it couldn’t hold on to the lead. The game was tied, 8-8, at the end of the third, and Lakeridge led 11-10 in the fourth before middie Jake Bishop scored with 1:18 remaining in regulation to tie it for Portland Jesuit.

The teams then played more than seven minutes of scoreless lacrosse before the 6-foot-7 Hoch, whose name means “high” in German, ended it.

“It looked like our first game of the season, but we played with a lot of heart,” Lakeridge head coach Curt Sheinin said. “We definitely need to work on ground balls, but I’m pleased.”
