ORE GIRLS: OGLA Playoffs: Lake Oswego Tops Century, 12-7
May 15th, 2009
Junior attack Alissa Johnston scored a game-high six goals to lead Lake Oswego to a 12-7 victory over Century in an Oregon Girls Lacrosse Association quarterfinal Thursday night.
Freshman middie Paige Timberg and junior middie Kendall Guthrie each added a pair of goals to help the Lakers (13-3) advance to the state semifinals.
Lake Oswego will next face Lincoln on Monday night, May 18, at 8 p.m., PDT, at Tualatin Hills Park. It will be the first meeting between the teams this season, although Lake Oswego has beaten Lincoln in two historic and dramatic state-championship games this decade.
“We’re looking forward to it,” Lake Oswego head coach Lauren Anderson said. “There’s a lot of history in the Lincoln-Lake Oswego match-up. Historically, we’ve had their number. I hope that trend continues.”
On Thursday, junior middie Amy Schlesinger added a goal and an assist, and senior middie Flannery Underwood scored once for the Lakers.
Defensively, senior goalie Evan Goldsmith saved eight shots.
In defeat, Courtney Manning finished with a team-high four points on three goals and one assist for Century, which finished the season 15-3.
Century led 5-3 in the first half, but Lake Oswego turned the game around with a six-goal run.
The Lakers scored the first three goals of the run during the first half to take a 6-5 lead into intermission. Lake Oswego then scored three more unanswered goals to start the second half. By the time Guthrie scored with 18 minutes remaining, the Lakers led 9-5.
“I’m very proud of them,” Anderson said. “They’ve been working real hard at the end of the season, and we’re peaking at just the right time.”
