ID BOYS: Lake City Wins 4th Straight North Idaho Lacrosse Title

Junior attackman Travis Barron registered a game-high four points on two goals and two assists to lead Lake City to a 6-4 victory over Gonzaga Prep in the North Idaho Lacrosse League championship game Friday night.

Sophomore middie Jesse Hanson added two points on a goal and an assist to help the Timberwolves (11-3) win their fourth straight NILL title.

Senior attackman Adam Fenenbock, sophomore attackman Brad Smidt and junior middie Adam Marfice all had a goal to round out the scoring for Lake City, which has won eight straight.

Defensively, senior goalie Ben Kopke saved 10 shots, and along with Fenenbock, picked up his fourth championship.

“It’s just amazing,” Kopke said. “Adam Fenenbock and I both have been on varsity since our freshmen year. We looked up to the seniors and juniors at that time, and the upperclassmen taught the underclassmen the tradition and the excellence of the program.”

With the victory, Lake City advanced to the second-annual Idaho state championship game. The Timberwolves will travel to Boise next Saturday, May 23, to face the Treasure Valley Lacrosse League champion. Timberline plays Centennial to determine that title tomorrow night.

On Friday, the game was tied, 1-1, at the end of the first quarter, 2-2, at halftime and Gonzaga Prep led 3-2 at the end of the third quarter.

But Lake City reeled off four straight goals to start the fourth and take control. Marfice capped the run when he scored with 5:30 remaining in regulation to put Lake City ahead, 6-3.

Gonzaga Prep junior middie Peter Ganz scored his only goal with 2:34 remaining to pull his team back within two, but that was as close as it would get.

In defeat, sophomore attackman Geoff Barnes finished with three points on a goal and two assists, and sophomore attackman Logan Rogers scored twice for Gonzaga Prep, which finished the season 8-4.

“They outplayed us and deserved to win,” Gonzaga Prep assistant coach Mark Finley said. “They played well, especially down the home stretch. We couldn’t generate any offense and they could.”
