SoCAL BOYS: Kyle Runyon Commits to Notre Dame
August 25th, 2010
Coronado senior middie Kyle Runyon will be following in his high school coach’s footsteps.
Runyon, a returning U.S. Lacrosse High School All-American selection, has committed to play NCAA Division I lacrosse at the University of Notre Dame, where Islanders’ head coach Alex Cade was an NCAA Division I honorable-mention All-American.
Runyon said he also considered Vermont, Fairfield, Bucknell and Lehigh before settling on the South Bend, Ind.-based school.
“I decided I wanted to try to make a difference on a good team that will obviously do great things in the future,” Runyon said. “I’ve wanted to go there since I was a little kid.”
Cade called Runyon -- who started on attack as a sophomore during Coronado’s 2009 CIF-San Diego Section championship run -- one of the most dominant offensive players he has ever coached.
“He is also a very strong leader, who has risen to nearly every challenge he has faced,” Cade said. “Obviously, I’m proud that he will be going to my alma mater and have no doubt he has the drive and work ethic to rise to the occasion.”
Runyon added that there are things he needs to improve upon as a player, but he is ready to meet the challenge.
“I think I can do it,” Runyon said. “I just need to work on getting stronger and working on my lacrosse I.Q., because all the players back there have been playing their whole lives.”
