March 14th, 2009
Junior middie Kodie Englehart scored a game-high four goals to lead No. 16 Coronado to a 10-8 victory over No. 12 De La Salle in a CIF intersectional game Friday night.
Senior middie Jackson Cusick added a pair of goals, sophomore attackman Kyle Runyon dished two assists and senior attackman Bobby Braun had a goal and an assist to help Coronado (1-0) win its season opener.
Senior middie Andrew Funk, senior middie Ian McRae and junior middie Kevin Seifert all added single goals to round out the scoring for the Islanders.
In a losing effort, senior Nick Richards had a team-high four points on three goals and one assist, and junior Sean Mullin scored twice for De La Salle, which fell to 2-1.
De La Salle led 8-7 at the end of the third quarter, but Coronado scored three goals in the opening five minutes of the fourth to take control.
Seifert brought the Islanders level when he scored 16 seconds into the final period, Englehart had the go-ahead goal with 9:31 remaining and Cusick added insurance with 7:02 to play. Coronado’s defense, meanwhile, held the Spartans without a goal the entire fourth quarter.
“It was tough in the beginning, because it was our first game, but we pulled it together,” Englehart said. “We stepped it up in the second, third and fourth quarters, dominated ground balls and started putting our shots on cage.”
