Senior middie Dane Wicks scored a game-high four goals, including the game-winning strike in the final two minutes, to lead Keller to a come-from-behind, 6-5 victory over Colleyville in the Texas High School Lacrosse League North District Division III championship game Sunday afternoon at Hillcrest Franklin Field.
Junior middie Austin Eller and junior attackman Michael Connolly each scored a goal, and junior attackman Ryan Kitch had an assist to help Keller (11-3) win its first district title in program history.
“We overcame a lot of adversity, and we played with a ‘we’ mentality and not an ‘I’ mentality,” Keller head coach Mike Smith said. “Hard work and dedication paid off.”
Colleyville, which led by two goals going into the fourth quarter, finished the season 11-7.
Keller led 2-1 at the end of the first quarter, Colleyville led 3-2 at halftime and the Panthers were ahead, 5-3, at the end of the third quarter.
But Keller rallied in the fourth.
Wicks scored his third of the game to pull Keller to within 5-4, Eller scored the equalizer and Wicks fired home his second of the quarter to put his team ahead to stay.
“Not finishing games has been an Achilles heel for us,” Smith said. “But the last two games against Colleyville, we’ve played all four quarters and the final score reflected that hard work.”
