TEX BOYS: Katy Picks Up First Win in Program History

It appears the Katy varsity lacrosse team just needed an infusion of a little freshmen blood.

Three freshmen combined to score eight goals to lead the Tigers to a 9-4 victory over Westside in a Texas High School Lacrosse League South District Division II game.

It was a landmark win for Katy, which went 0-15 in 2009, its first season as a varsity program.

Freshman attackman Keegan Fry scored a game-high three goals, freshman attackman Will Cross added three points on two goals and an assist and freshman attackman Austin Tucker scored twice for the Tigers (0-1), who won their official season opener.

Senior middie Mark Hill also scored two goals for Katy, which had its original season opener against Stratford-Westchester suspended in the third quarter on Tuesday. Katy trailed 7-5 in that game, which will be completed later this month, but just staying that close with the traditionally strong Spartans showed that the Tigers are much improved.

On Thursday, Katy led 2-0 at the end of the first quarter, 3-0 at halftime and 6-3 going into the fourth quarter.

Westside (0-1) lost its season opener. The Wolves have lost 11 straight, dating back to last season’s 6-3 victory over Katy on Feb. 19, 2009.

“We looked very good tonight,” Katy head coach Matt Spears said. “It’s nice getting our first win after not winning one last season. We still have some room for improvement, but for our first game, I was pretty happy with it.”
