SoCAL BOYS: Jonny Poe Commits to Washington College

Coronado senior long-stick middie Jonny Poe spoke to a few coaches at this summer’s Adrenaline Shootout, but it wasn’t until he returned to San Diego that he got an e-mail from the staff at Washington College.

Considering his two coaches on the LaxDawgs Brown Elite club team -- Dan Meehan and John Chrismer -- each played at Washington, it seems the Chestertown, Md.-based school had an unfair leg up on the competition right from the start.

On Thursday, Poe officially announced he has verbally committed to play NCAA Division III lacrosse at Washington. He said he also considered Arizona State and Loyola-Marymount but picked Washington because he liked the team and the academics.

“They have a really good lacrosse program, and they’re a great liberal-arts school,” Poe said. “I really like the environment there. It’s really similar to Coronado. I had a great feel for it when I visited.”

Poe said he thinks he can succeed at the college level.

“I just have to keep working hard,” he said. “I think I’ll fit in well if I keep working out and running. I should be able to transition well.”
