AS: Jim Little Leads NorCal Sniper Past Oregon Rhino Rage, 7-6
July 24th, 2009
Dominican-bound middie Jim Little registered a game-high four points on a goal and three assists to lead NorCal Sniper to a 7-6 victory over the Oregon Rhino Rage in an Adrenaline Shootout boys high school division first-round game Thursday night at Sonoma State University.
Attackman Travis Turley added two critical second-half goals, and attackman Casey Hock had a goal and an assist for Sniper (2-0), which led by three in the second half before it held on down the stretch to win its second straight.
Middies Cody Soberanes, Jake Becker and Spencer Kitchin all had a goal, as did attackman Scott Francis to round out the scoring.
Defensively, goalie Niko Dutra saved nine shots, including two one-on-one stops on the doorstep in the second half.
In defeat, attackman Jake Beall finished with a goal and an assist and was the only multiple-point producer for Rhino Rage (1-1). Middie Tyler Preston, attackman Jordan Goodspeed, middie Connor Dack, middie Parker Dotsey and Zach Lindahl all scored once.
The game was tied, 4-4, early in the second half when Little and Turley sparked a three-goal run. Turley scored back-to-back goals with 22 and 20 minutes remaining, the first of which was assisted by Little, to put Sniper up 6-4. Little then set up Kitchin with 11 minutes to play to make it 7-4.
Dotsey scored with four minutes to play to bring Rhino within two goals, and Lindahl scored on an acrobatic play in front of the crease to pull Oregon within one in the final minute.
But Sniper got possession on the ensuing face-off and ran out the clock.
“We’re just winning the ground balls,” Little said. “We possessed a little better in the second half, and we pulled it out there at the end.”
