AZ BOYS: Huge Rally Lifts Tucson TV Past Saguaro, 10-9

March 14th, 2010

Senior attackman Jake Plaisted scored two man-up goals in the final two minutes to lead Tucson Tanque Verde to a come-from-behind, 10-9 victory over Saguaro in an Arizona Youth Lacrosse League Division I game Saturday afternoon in Tucson.

Plaisted scored the game-tying goal on a two-man-up situation with 1:56 remaining, and he scored the game-winning goal on a one-man-up situation with one minute to play, as Tucson (2-0) overcame a five-goal, second half deficit to win in a shocker.

Senior attackman Stephen Hutchison had a team-high four points on three goals and one assist, junior middie Phil Coogan registered three points on two goals and one assist and junior middie Erik Misiak finished with three points on a goal and two assists for Tanque Verde, which is the surprise team in Arizona so far this season.

Freshman attackman Cody Lloyd had a goal and an assist, and senior middie Jeff Welier scored once to round out the Tucson attack.

Defensively, senior goalie Brandon Holley saved 11 shots.

In defeat, Justin Straker finished with a game-high six points on three goals and three assists for Saguaro (0-2), which lost its second straight to start the season.

Saguaro led 4-0 at the end of the first quarter, 7-2 at halftime and 9-6 at the end of the third quarter.

Saguaro held a 9-8 lead late in the fourth quarter when it took a one-minute, unnecessary-roughness penalty with 2:09 remaining. Compounding the initial penalty, Saguaro then was assessed two one-minute, non-releasable penalties for talking back to the referees. One penalty was given to the same player who took the initial infraction.

Tanque Verde took advantage.

Plaisted scored the equalizer 13 seconds into the ensuing two-man-up opportunity, and he scored again nine seconds after one of the players came back on the field to complete the comeback.

“This is a raw, new team, and I had very low expectations,” Tucson head coach Chuck Rullan said. “They’ve got me drinking the Kool-Aid now. They’ve got me believing.”

legacy

How crazy is it that the two coaches who faced each other in this game, who are probably 30+ years apart in age, learned the game from the same coach, Jack Kaley, three time zones away on Long Island?

Saguaro's Brett Neal - NYIT '09

Tucson Tanque Verde's Chuck Rullan - East Meadow '??

That is what you call a "coaching legacy."

Those who have experienced Coach Kaley, particularly when he is pontificating on ground ball play, know that he is one of a kind.
