Sophomore attackman Max Skibber scored a game-high five goals to lead Houston Episcopal to an 8-6 victory over No. 20 Dallas Episcopal in a Texas High School Lacrosse League Division I quarterfinal Sunday afternoon at House Park in Austin.
Senior middie Hunter Houston added three points on two goals and one assist, and senior middie Parker Mason had three points on a goal and two assists to help the Knights (16-9) win their eighth straight.
Defensively, senior goalie Nick Skibber saved 15 shots for a team that appeared to be all but finished about a month ago.
Houston Episcopal, which has completely turned its season around after an 8-9 start, has advanced to the state semifinals. The Knights will next face the winner of Sunday’s Strake Jesuit-St. Mark’s quarterfinal next Saturday at Highland Park High School in Dallas.
“We bought into playing for each other and playing for our school,” Houston Episcopal assistant coach Connor Cook said. “We bought into the one-more theme. One more game, one more play. We’re just not afraid to play anybody. We couldn’t be more proud of our boys.”
In defeat, junior attackman Phil Wagley and junior middie James Collins each scored three goals for Dallas Episcopal, which finished the season 12-7. Dallas Episcopal committed 36 turnovers Sunday.
“We did not take care of the ball, and Episcopal Houston played extremely well,” said Dallas Episcopal head coach Kevin Barnicle, whose team lost for the third time this year against a South District opponent. “We had too many turnovers.”
Houston Episcopal led 4-1 at the end of the first quarter, 7-4 at halftime and 8-5 at the end of the third before holding on down the stretch.
“We came to play today,” Cook said. “Our seniors provided us great leadership all week, and it really helped us finish.”
