TEX BOYS: Houston Episcopal Upsets No. 11 Strake Jesuit
March 26th, 2010
Senior middie Parker Mason registered a game-high five points on three goals and two assists to lead Houston Episcopal to an 11-7 upset victory over No. 11 Strake Jesuit in a Texas High School Lacrosse League South District Division I game Thursday night.
Sophomore attackman Max Skibber scored four goals, senior attackman Ryan Cleary added three points on two goals and one assist and senior defenseman Michael Lintner had three points on a goal and two assists to help the Knights (8-6) win their second straight.
Junior attackman John Gentry had a goal to round out the scoring for Houston Episcopal, which had lost four straight coming into the week before knocking off St. John’s and Strake Jesuit.
Defensively, senior goalie Nick Skibber saved 11 shots.
“We’re proud of the guys who came out and fought,” Houston Episcopal assistant coach Connor Cook said. “We have a ton of respect for Strake Jesuit and their program. We know we’re going to see them down the road, and they’ll be ready for us.”
In defeat, senior attackman Joey Wippold finished with a team-high four points on three goals and one assist, and senior attackman Chris Duin added three points on two goals and one assist for Strake Jesuit (10-4), which lost its second straight.
Houston Episcopal led 3-2 at the end of the first quarter, 7-2 at halftime and 10-6 at the end of the third quarter. The Knights were never seriously threatened during the final 12 minutes and pulled off a surprisingly comfortable margin of victory.
“They played a hell of a ball game,” Strake Jesuit head coach Mike Block said. “They got to the ground balls and hustled and worked. We didn’t play together. We tried to be hot dogs, were shooting the ball underhand and side-armed, and instead of trying to play team offense, we tried to be superstars.”
