Junior middie Dale Wallace registered a game-high four points on three goals and one assist to lead Houston Christian to a 9-5 victory over Clear Lake in the Texas High School Lacrosse League South District Division II championship game Sunday night.
With the victory, Houston Christian (19-1) won its 14th straight game and took home its first Houston city title in just the second full year of varsity lacrosse at the school. The Mustangs, who went 5-9 last year, have advanced to the Division II semifinals.
“I’m very excited as a coach and delighted with the group of boys that I have,” Houston Christian head coach Pete Lehle said. “I think it speaks volumes for the players we have and how far we’ve come.”
Houston Christian took 51 shots Sunday, but had difficulty getting it past Clear Lake senior goalie Mike Candler, who finished with 17 saves.
Clear Lake (8-4) led 2-0 at the end of the first quarter and stayed with the Mustangs throughout.
“We just couldn’t shoot tonight,” Lehle said. “We controlled the entire game. They didn’t do anything against my defense. But they played tough. They fought the whole game. They didn’t have the ball, but they didn’t go away.”
In a losing effort, sophomore attackman Cody Garcia scored twice, freshman attackman Brendan Harvey and junior attackman Eric Botto each finished with a goal and an assist, and junior middie Troy Smith had a goal for Clear Lake, which had its seven-game winning streak snapped.
“I thought we played hard,” Clear Lake head coach Ray Botto said. “I’m proud of the season we put in. I’m looking forward to next year.”
