AZ GIRLS: Horizon II Wins Division II State Championship

May 1st, 2010

Tayler Heath scored a game-high seven goals to lead top-seeded Horizon II to a 14-11 victory over third-seeded Desert Vista in the Arizona Girls Lacrosse Association Division II state championship game Friday night in Scottsdale.

Sydney St. Clair added three points on two goals and one assist, Alex Aguirre scored twice and Abby Jensen had a goal and an assist to help Huskies II (16-2) win a title in their first season. This is the first year in which the AGLA has allowed programs to field two varsity programs.

Maddy Sportbert and Bayleigh Fuller each scored once to round out the Horizon offense.

“It was awesome,” Horizon head coach Lauren Wheeler said. “They worked hard the whole season. They deserved it.”

Desert Vista finished the year 9-8.

Horizon led 6-4 at halftime before the Thunder stormed back in the second half. The game was tied, 11-11, late in regulation, but the Huskies took control in the final three minutes.

Heath scored the go-ahead goal with 2:50 remaining in regulation to put Horizon ahead, 12-11. Aguirre then added insurance when she scored with 2:20 and with 1:39 to play to put it away.

“It just shows we can come out in the end and finish strong,” Wheeler said. “We were able to step up. It was pretty cool. It showed a lot of heart and desire.”
