Highland Park Upsets National Power Lawrenceville

Senior middie Austin Mai scored the game-winning goal in the opening minute of sudden-death overtime to give No. 3 Highland Park a stunning, 12-11 upset victory over national power Lawrenceville on Sunday afternoon in New Jersey.

In the second game of a weekend trip to the Garden State, the Fighting Scots pulled off a landmark victory for the lacrosse community in the state of Texas and the Western United States.

“This is the biggest win in the history of our program,” Highland Park head coach Derek Thomson said. “I think it’s a good lesson to all of our Texas programs that we do belong, because from the opening whistle we expected to win.”

With the game tied, 11-11, Highland Park senior middie Briggs Montgomery won the face-off to start overtime. Highland Park immediately called timeout, and coming out of it, junior middie Chase Prospere fed Mai, who was situated about 10 yards away from the cage.

Mai fired a high shot, off-stick side, into the cage, setting off a delirious scene on the field and the Highland Park sideline.

“It was quite a celebration,” Thomson said.

Prospere finished with a team-high four points on a goal and three assists, Montgomery scored three goals and Mai and senior attackman Kevin Fritts each finished with three points on two goals and an assist for the Fighting Scots (11-1), who have won six straight since dropping a game to St. Mary’s Annapolis (Md.) on March 20.

Senior attackman Cody Crews added a pair of goals, senior attackman Will Ziegler finished with a goal and an assist and junior middie Campbell Powers had a goal to round out the scoring for Highland Park, which led by as many as four.

Defensively, junior goalie Jordan Lee saved 15 shots.

In defeat, senior attackman Luke Armour scored a game-high six goals for Lawrenceville, which fell to 3-2.

The Big Red scored the game’s first goal, but Highland Park answered with five straight to take its biggest lead, 5-1, in the first quarter.

Highland Park led 5-2 at the end of the first, 8-5 at halftime and 9-6 going into the fourth quarter. Midway through the fourth, the Fighting Scots led 11-8 and appeared heading for an unlikely victory.

But Lawrenceville came back, scoring three unanswered goals in the final six minutes to pull even and force overtime.

“Unlike the game in March against St. Mary’s, when our kids lost their composure, this time we learned from it,” said Thomson, whose team opened the weekend with a 13-5 victory over Montgomery (N.J.).

Highland Park struck fast in the overtime, leaving the hosts from New Jersey in disbelief.

“Coming into the weekend, I told the kids it was all about a matter of opportunity and what they make of it,” Thomson said. “I think they did a great job this weekend of rising to the challenge and showing the competitive nature of our team.”

YES THEY DID!! Check it

YES THEY DID!! Check it dumbass: http://westsidelax.com/node/3898 You are an idiot. We also played them this year. There team comes to AZ every year looking to win. The players also stay with the Brophy players as host families and they played all their starters. It's a real game for Lawrenceville, they never hold back.

Sounds like a scrimmage to

Sounds like a scrimmage to me, its not posted that they played you this year either. And yes, they use ANY preaseasonto evaulate their players.

Ref and Brophy

Im just jumping in the conversation but the game must have been a scrimmage becasue its not posted on Laxpower. All sanctioned games are on laxpower while scrimages are not. Could it be that Westside posted a scrimage as a real game because of its bias?? Im just asking thats all. I also checked and the guy was right, Laxpower had Brophy ranked 355 while HP 138 last year. If the Lawrenceville game was real then Brophy would have been ranked much higher, no? I dont know about the ref here in dallas but I do know of one that lives in both places. Could that be the guy?

Westside Lax

Can you tell us if the game was a scrimmage?? It is not counted on Laxpower....

The Debate Continues

There was some debate about that last season. My recollection is that Brophy considered it a game and Lawrenceville considered it a scrimmage. That tends to happen sometimes, where one team considers a contest a game and the other a scrimmage and debate rages on for years about whether something was a real game or not. When Inside Lacrosse posted a link to our Brophy-Lawrenceville story last year, all the Lawrenceville people chimed in that it was a scrimmage and not a real game. But the Brophy staff and all the Brophy players said it was a real game. Since we're West Side Lax, we go with the West Side team, in this case Brophy. With regards to Highland Park-Lawrenceville, there is no debate. Everyone viewed it as a game, and the fact that Highland Park won on the road in April makes it even more impressive.

Proves it was a scrimmage

Obviously if both coaches do not agree beforehand that it is a legitamite contest, then it is not. All legitamite games are posted on Laxpower, so there is no debate. Also, Lawrenceville uses those PRESEASON games to evaluate players and send some down to JV or cut. Just like this year and the 10 years past. The game has no bearing on national or regional rankings, so it was definitely a scrimmage. A west coast website with west coast bias is not shocking, but twisting the truth is.

No Twisting Done Here

There was no twisting of the truth. Brophy called it in as a game, so we treated it as such. After the fact, it came out on a different site that the losing team believed it was a scrimmage. We have had had other situations in which losing teams claim after the fact, after they have lost, that it wasn't a real game. We will make a judgment call as to whether it should be treated as a game or scrimmage, and in this particular case we decided it should be treated as a game. And, for the record, LaxPower is not the end all, be all, determining factor of what is and what isn't a game. There are numerous full-fledged games played throughout the season, every season, that aren't posted on LaxPower that should count. Furthermore, there are "games" that are posted on LaxPower that shouldn't be counted, but are posted anyway.

WOOOOOW

Why would you bring up Gonzaga? that has nothing to do with the argument. Wow, and that is why Inside Lacrosse ranked Brophy as the 4th best team on the west coast last year. Ok, so they lost to Gonzaga, but they put up a huge fight against Georgetown Prep and lost by only 2. How was it shameful? They beat Lawrenceville, won their state, and played tons of good out of state teams. Wow, so who exactly is this ref from Texas and apparently AZ as well. You just happened to ask that exact ref who was better between Brophy and Highland Park? That sounds a little bit sketch to me, I am sorry. I am pretty sure you just made up that ref but whatever.
