In yet another sign of the growth of lacrosse in the West, an Oregon prep star is headed to play for arguably the biggest program in collegiate lacrosse.
Former Lincoln middie Henry Schoonmaker has confirmed to WSL that he’s signed a national letter of intent to play for Syracuse University, winners of an NCAA record 11 Division I national titles.
“As far as I know, he’s the first kid from the (Pacific) Northwest and maybe the second or third from the West Coast to play for (Syracuse),” said Lincoln head coach Will Harris, who won two state titles and made a third championship game with Schoonmaker.
Despite ending up at an elite program, Schoonmaker said he wasn’t heavily recruited because the summer between his sophomore and junior seasons – a key time for recruits, especially those on the less-scouted West Coast, to be exposed to college coaches – he spent six weeks in the hospital after contracting the E Coli virus.
“I really wanted to play (Division I), but after spending all that time in the hospital I got a late start and not a lot of schools knew a lot about me,” Schoonmaker said.
But he had an ace in the hole in the form of Ryan Powell, a four-time All American at Syracuse who has settled in Portland and has coached Schoonmaker in clinics and summer leagues and strongly recommended him to his alma mater.
“Syracuse had seen me some but wasn’t sure about me (as a prospect), but Ryan called their coaches and told them what I could do,” Schoonmaker said. “He really helped me out.”
