MEN: Freshman Leads No. 1 Michigan Past No. 5 BYU, 13-9
March 7th, 2010
Freshman attackman Thomas Paras registered a game-high six points on three goals and three assists to lead No. 1 Michigan to a 13-9 victory over No. 5 Brigham Young in an MCLA Division I game Saturday night in Utah.
Junior attackman Trevor Yealy scored three goals, senior middie Jamison Goldberg added three points on two goals and one assist and senior middie David Rogers had a goal and an assist to help the Wolverines (3-0) continue their long winning streak. Michigan has now won 43 straight.
The Wolverines won Saturday night without the services of six players, including five starters, who were suspended for the game for breaking curfew.
“We had a lot of guys who had to step up tonight, and they did,” Michigan head coach John Paul said.
In defeat, Elliot Grow finished with a team-high five points on a goal and four assists, Kent Mann scored twice and Brian Mathay added a goal and an assist for the Cougars (3-2), whose two losses have come against the MCLA’s top-two ranked teams.
Brigham Young got off to a dream start when Daniel Cole, Mann and Grow scored back-to-back-to-back to put the home side up 3-0 with 3:22 remaining in the first quarter.
But Michigan answered by scoring six unanswered goals to take a 6-3 lead, and the Wolverines never trailed again. The best BYU could do was tie it, 6-6, on a Mann-from-Grow combination with 6:43 remaining in the third quarter.
However, Michigan responded once again, this time with a four-goal run. By the time Yealy scored with 11:28 to play in regulation, the Wolverines had a 10-6 lead.
“For us, tonight, it was just about playing smart, with so many young kids playing,” Paul said. “And, for the most part, we did.”
