MEN: Fontbonne Rolls Past Struggling Southwestern, 25-5
March 7th, 2010
Senior attackman Brooks McGee and freshman attackman Peter Travis each registered a co-game-high eight points to lead Fontbonne to a 25-5 victory over Southwestern in an NCAA Division III game Sunday afternoon in St. Louis.
McGee finished with five goals and three assists, and Travis added a goal and seven assists, as the Griffins (1-2) rolled to their first victory of the season.
Freshman attackman Adam Walker scored six goals, senior middie Ray Medalla added six points on four goals and two assists and senior attackman Jack Deimert had five points on three goals and two assists for Fontbonne.
In defeat, Thomas Mock scored twice for Southwestern (0-5), which is struggling in a big way in its first NCAA-sanctioned season. The Pirates have been outscored, 100-23, in their opening five games.
On Sunday, Fontbonne outshot Southwestern 48-17 and had a 34-15 advantage on ground balls.
The Griffins led 7-2 at the end of the first quarter, 14-3 at halftime and 21-4 going into the fourth quarter.
The game was Fontbonne’s final tune-up before next weekend’s inaugural Midwest Lacrosse Conference opener. Fontbonne will host Cincinnati-based Mount St. Joseph next Saturday at 2 p.m., CT, in its first-ever conference game.
“I think we got the opportunity to execute against an inferior opponent, and we did so,” Fontbonne head coach Nick Silva said. “We’re going to have to execute a lot better next week against Mt. St. Joe, though.”
