MO BOYS: MSLA Playoffs: Matt Kraus Leads Eureka Past SLUH
May 22nd, 2010
Senior middie Matt Kraus scored a game-high five goals to lead second-seeded Eureka to an 7-4 victory over seventh-seeded St. Louis University Jesuit in a Missouri Scholastic Lacrosse Association Division I quarterfinal Saturday afternoon.
Junior attackman Henry Tellini added three points on a goal and two assists, and junior attackman Alex Hepper finished with two points on a goal and an assist to help the Wildcats (11-3) advance to the state semifinals for the first time in program history at the Division I level.
Eureka will next face sixth-seeded Chaminade Prep on Wednesday, May 26, at Lindenwood University. The winner will make its first-ever trip to the state championship game.
“Chaminade is a great team,” Eureka head coach Jon Silva said. “They’ve got good players. They’re solid on defense, they’re solid in the midfield and they’re solid on offense. It should be a good match-up.”
On Saturday, junior attackman Matt Ward and junior middie Ryan Gardner each dished a pair of assists to round out the offense for Eureka.
Defensively, senior goalie Anthony Paschke saved 14 shots.
St. Louis University Jesuit finished the season 13-5.
Eureka led 3-1 at the end of the first quarter, 4-2 at halftime and 5-3 at the end of the third quarter.
“It was a huge team win,” Silva said. “Every game, one of our six starting offensive players has stepped up big, and today it was Matt Kraus.”
