MINN GIRLS: Eden Prairie Wins 4th Straight Section 6 Title

June 5th, 2010

Senior attack Blake Kist registered a game-high 12 points on eight goals and four assists to lead No. 10 Eden Prairie to a 23-8 victory over Wayzata in the Minnesota State High School League Section 6 championship game Friday.

Senior attack Maya Farrell added seven points on four goals and three assists, and freshman attack Emma Claire Fontenot finished with six points on three goals and three assists to help the top-seeded Eagles (16-1) extend their in-state winning streak to 31 games and claim their fourth consecutive Section 6 title.

Defending state champion Eden Prairie, which is the only No. 1 seed in Minnesota to advance to the state tournament in boys or girls lacrosse this season, has advanced to the state semifinals. Eden Prairie will be the No. 1 seed at the state tournament and almost certainly face Mounds View in the next round, although the state-tournament pairings will not officially be released until this weekend.

“It’s going to be tougher competition this year, and we’re going to have to play good Eden Prairie lacrosse to finish as the champion,” Eden Prairie co-head coach Judy Baxter said. “We’re looking forward to it.”

On Friday, freshman attack Allie Lacombe had five points on three goals and two assists, sophomore middie Christine Easton added four points on three goals and one assist and freshman attack Tess Roehl and junior attack Cierra Stifel both scored once to round out the offense for Eden Prairie, which hasn’t lost a game to a Minnesota opponent since the 2008 state championship game.

In defeat, Ava Propesol and Dana Pralle each scored twice for third-seeded Wayzata, which finished the season 11-6.

Wayzata got off to a dream start, scoring two goals in the opening minute and three in the opening two minutes to take a shock, 3-0 lead. But it was all Eden Prairie from there.

The Eagles responded with a 16-2 run over the final 23 minutes of the first half to take a 16-5 halftime lead, and there was never any doubt in the second half.

“It was a very hard-fought battle and a great victory for us,” Baxter said. “We played with a lot of intensity. After we got down three, we took charge of the draw and set the tone for the game.”
