MINN BOYS: Eagan Wins First-Ever Section 3 Championship
June 5th, 2010
Senior attackman Chris Bowen registered a game-high five points on three goals and two assists to lead second-seeded Eagan to a 10-4 victory over fourth-seeded Apple Valley in the Minnesota State High School League Section 3 championship game Friday night at Burnsville High School.
Senior attackman Kyle Harren added three goals, and senior attackman Kyle Sturgeon had three points on a goal and two assists to help the Wildcats (12-4) win their first Section 3 title in school history. Eagan has advanced to the state semifinals for the first time.
Although the seeds will not be made official until the weekend, it is likely that Eagan will face Totino-Grace in next week's state semifinals.
On Friday, senior middie Willie Hersman finished with a goal and an assist, and senior middies Luke Thiele and Kyle Grovenstein each scored once to round out the offense for Eagan, which enters the state tournament on a five-game winning streak.
In defeat, senior attackman Chris Fischer scored a team-high two goals for Apple Valley, which finished the season 12-5. Apple Valley had its four-game winning streak snapped.
Eagan led 3-2 at the end of the first quarter before reeling off four straight goals in the second to take a 7-2 halftime lead. The Wildcats led 9-3 going into the final 12 minutes.
