MEN: Drew Deals Whittier First Loss of the Season, 8-5

Attackman Jon Bucknam registered a game-high five points on a goal and four assists to lead Drew to an 8-5 victory over Whittier in an NCAA Division III game Monday afternoon in Southern California.
Attackman Scott Humphreys scored three goals, and Mike Sayers, Greg Reading, Stephen Gentile and Ari Young all added a goal apiece to help Drew (2-0) win its second straight to start the season.
Defensively, goalie Charlie DeSocio saved 11 shots in the second half.
In defeat, attackman Daniel McQuade scored a team-high two goals, and attackman Charlie Fisher had a goal and an assist for the Poets (3-1), who had their three-game winning streak snapped. Attackman Lee Oshnock and middie Christian Wright also scored once for Whittier.
In the cage, goalie Robert Bazlen made eight saves.
Whittier led 2-1 at the end of the first quarter, but Drew answered with a six-goal run that effectively put the game away.
Drew led 5-2 at halftime before Sayers scored just 28 seconds into the second half to push the lead to four, and Humphreys scored with 11:56 remaining to make it 7-2.
It was 8-4 at the end of the third quarter, and the Poets couldn’t muster a goal until there was just 40 seconds remaining in regulation, when McQuade fired one home.
