COL BOYS: Douglas County Rallies to Beat Denver East, 11-9

March 12th, 2010

Senior middie Casey Joy scored the go-ahead goal about midway through the fourth quarter to help lead Douglas County to a come-from-behind, 11-9 victory over Denver East in a Colorado High School Activities Association game Thursday night.

Joy, who finished with a co-team-high three points on two goals and an assist, put Douglas County (1-1) ahead to stay with 5:14 remaining in regulation after Denver East had led by two goals on two occasions in the fourth quarter.

Sophomore attackman Ethan Krueger scored the insurance goal with 4:27 to play to give the Huskies a two-goal lead they would never relinquish.

Krueger and senior attackman Elsworth McCormack each scored a co-team-high three goals for Douglas County, which bounced back from its 13-goal, season-opening loss to No. 6 Mullen. Senior middie Aaron Amaya dished a pair of assists, and three others scored once to round out the offense for the Huskies.

In defeat, Danny Prevedel registered a game-high six points on four goals and two assists for Denver East (0-1), which dropped its season opener.

The game was tied, 2-2, at the end of the first quarter, Denver East led 5-4 at halftime and the Angels were up 8-6 at the end of the third quarter. The teams traded goals to start the fourth, and Douglas County finished the game on a four-goal run after it trailed, 9-7.

“We had a lot of character,” Douglas County head coach Kevin Folven said. “We played dumb, I thought, for a lot of the first three quarters. But in the fourth quarter, we settled down, moved the ball around a lot and made some good plays.”
