WOMEN: Denver Rolls Over St. Mary's in Opener, 18-5

Middie Lauren Ciccomascolo and attacker Kara Secora each registered a co-game-high six points to lead Denver to an 18-5 victory over St. Mary’s in an NCAA Division I Mountain Pacific Sports Federation game Friday afternoon.

In the first women’s college lacrosse game of the 2010 season, Ciccomascolo and Secora each scored four goals and added a pair of assists to help Denver (1-0, 1-0 MPSF) cruise an easy victory. Denver led by as many as 14 on two separate occasions.

Middie Kirsty Faulder scored four goals, middie Ali Flury added three and middie Lexi Sanders had three points on two goals and an assist for the Pioneers. Becca Steinberg dished two assists, and Alex Befus had a goal to round out the scoring for Denver.

In defeat, Juliet Munoe, Maggie Schwab, Abbie Coleman, Mariah Walk and Cassandra Brunelle all scored once for St. Mary’s (0-1, 0-1). Brunelle’s goal is believed to be the first scored at the NCAA Division I level by a player from Idaho.

The Pioneers led 7-1 at halftime, an advantage they increased to 16-2 after Secora scored her third goal with 10:45 remaining in regulation. Secora’s fourth gave Denver a 17-3 lead with 5:16 remaining.

Brunelle’s historic goal came with 4:09 to play and brought St. Mary’s within 17-4.
