MEN: Denver Falls to Penn at Pioneer Face-Off Classic, 11-7

Middie Al Kohart registered a game-high six points on five goals and one assist to lead Pennsylvania to an 11-7 victory over Denver before a crowd of 1,402 Saturday afternoon at Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium.

Attackman Corey Winkoff added three points on a goal and two assists, and attackman Rob McMullen scored twice to help the Quakers (1-2) become the third team this season to pick up their first victory against the Pioneers.

The game was the second of a doubleheader at the Pioneer Face-Off Classic.

In defeat, sophomore attackman Mark Matthews registered a team-high three points on two goals and one assist for Denver, which fell to 1-3. Sophomore attackman Alex Demopoulos finished with three points on a goal and two assists, and junior middie Andrew Lay scored twice.

Penn led 3-2 at the end of the first quarter, 7-4 at halftime and 9-5 at the of the third quarter. The Quakers led by as many as five at 11-6 in the fourth.

“We didn’t play real hard, and Penn just kind of took it to us. I think our guys felt that after last week’s win we were going to come out here and roll over a team,” Denver head coach Bill Tierney said. “Penn made it very difficult, and there wasn’t a bright spot all day long.”
