MEN: Denver Edges Lehigh to Conclude Face-Off Classic, 8-7
March 8th, 2010
Freshman middie Cameron Flint scored a game-high three goals, and Denver held on to beat Lehigh, 8-7, before a crowd of 1,172 in the final game of the ninth-annual Pioneer Face-Off Classic Sunday afternoon at Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium.
Sophomore attackman Alex Demopoulos added three points on two goals and one assist, middie Cameron Kerr had a goal and an assist and freshman Hayden Schuette and Colin Scott each scored once for the Pioneers (2-3), who bounced back from Saturday’s loss to Pennsylvania.
Defensively, sophomore goalie Zander Buteux saved nine shots for the Pioneers.
In defeat, Brian Bienemann had a team-high three points on two goals and an assist for the Mountain Hawks, who fell to 2-3.
Denver led by as many as four goals on two occasions, first at 6-2 after Demopoulos scored with 13:53 remaining in the third quarter and again at 8-4 when Schuette scored with 3:49 to play in the third.
It was still 8-4 going into the fourth, but Lehigh stormed back in the final period, much like it did Saturday against Air Force. But this time, Denver had just enough left in the tank to pull out the win.
Lehigh finished the game on a three-goal run, capped by Adam Johnston, who scored to pull the Mountain Hawks within 8-7 with 2:57 to play.
But that was as close as it would get.
“It’s definitely nice to get a win,” Denver head coach Bill Tierney said. “I was so disappointed with yesterday’s effort, that today all we were asking for was to go hard. I think we did that.”
