COL GIRLS: CHSAA Playoffs: Denver East Escapes Chaparral
May 20th, 2010
Junior attack Lizzie Larson registered a game-high five points on two goals and three assists to lead No. 3 Denver East to a 15-12 victory over Chaparral in a Colorado High School Activities Association quarterfinal Wednesday afternoon.
Junior middie Tierra Romero added four points on three goals and an assist help the second-seeded Angels (15-1) advance to Saturday’s state semifinals. Denver East will next face No. 25 Kent Denver, the tournament’s sixth seed, for the right to play for the state championship.
In the teams’ only regular-season meeting, Denver East beat Kent Denver, 14-6, on April 9.
“We’re not going to take Kent lightly,” Denver East head coach Bobby Romero said. “We’ll prepare for them defensively, as usual. Offensively, we’re going to have to do some new stuff. I think the key will be the goalies.”
On Wednesday, Denver East overcame five yellow cards, an ejection to one of its top players and a two-goal second-half deficit to advance.
Sophomore Ellie Moran and senior Helen Gaffigan each scored three goals, and standout Maxwell Blair had a goal and an assist before she was thrown out after receiving her second yellow card.
In defeat, senior middie Allie Henderson had a team-high four points on three goals and one assist and senior attack Anna Schweiss scored three goals for seventh-seeded Chaparral, which finished the season 11-6.
The game was tied, 7-7, at halftime and Chaparral led 11-9 in the second half. But Denver East recovered in the final 10 minutes to finish the game on a 6-1 run.
“We didn’t play as a team in the beginning; we played as individuals,” Bobby Romero said. “Then we went back to having fun and got back to basics.”
