Freshman attackman Colin Scott registered a game-high five points on four goals and one assist to lead Denver to a 10-5 victory over Canisius in an NCAA Division I game Saturday night at Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium in Denver.
Freshman middie Cameron Flint added three points on two goals and one assist, and sophomore attackman Alex Demopoulos had a goal and an assist to help the Pioneers (3-3) win their second straight. John Dickenson, Cameron Kerr and Patrick Rogers all scored goals to round out the offense for the Pioneers, who led by as many as six goals.
In defeat, Simon Giourmetakis scored a team-high two goals for Buffalo-based Canisius, which fell to 0-3.
Denver dominated the game statistically, outshooting Canisius, 42-21, holding a 40-21 edge in ground balls and winning the face-off battle 12-7.
Canisius led 2-1 at the end of the first quarter, Denver led 4-2 at halftime and the Pioneers were ahead, 7-4 at the end of the third quarter.
Dever extended its lead to as much as six after Scott scored his fourth and final goal with 3:36 remaining to give the Pioneers a 10-4 lead.
“We started out the game making some very uncharacteristic mistakes, so I was a little frustrated with the way we came out,” Denver head coach Bill Tierney said. “But, the good news is that we were able to overcome that, and our offense got into a rhythm midway through the second quarter, giving us the momentum for the rest of the game.”
