TEX BOYS: THSLL Playoffs: Dallas Jesuit Hammers Austin
May 2nd, 2010
Senior attackman Jack Ken scored a game-high five goals to lead Dallas Jesuit to an 11-3 victory over No. 7 Austin in a Texas High School Lacrosse League Division I quarterfinal Sunday afternoon at Houston Christian High School.
Junior attackman Buck McClure dished four assists, and junior attackman Richie Sapp scored three goals to help the Rangers (14-6) advance to the state semifinals.
Dallas Jesuit will next face No. 1 Highland Park next Saturday at Highland Park for the right to play for the state title. In the teams’ only regular-season meeting, Highland Park beat Dallas Jesuit, 11-4, on April 16.
“They’re very well coached, they have a bunch of great athletes and it’s fun to play teams like that,” Dallas Jesuit head coach Chris Surran said. “We look forward to the challenge and the opportunity to play them. They’re playing at a very high level.”
On Saturday, junior middie Nick McVay scored twice, senior middie R.J. Shannon dished a pair of assists and sophomore attackman Matt Miller scored once to round out the Dallas Jesuit offense.
Defensively, sensational freshman goalie Dan Morris had another stellar outing. Morris saved 14 shots, including nine out of 10 in the first half.
Austin finished the season 12-3, had its 10-game winning streak snapped and suffered by far its most lopsided defeat of the year.
Dallas Jesuit led 2-0 at the end of the first quarter, 5-1 at halftime and 8-3 at the end of the third quarter. The Rangers then cruised to the finish in the fourth to punch their ticket as the third North District team to qualify for the Final 4.
“I think our guys executed the game plan and did what I told them to do, and they were rewarded for it,” Surran said. “We played extremely well when the ball was on the ground, we cleared the ball very well and we were good in transition.”
