NEB BOYS: NHSLA Semifinals: Creighton Prep Tops Papio, 10-3
May 15th, 2009
Senior middie Will Jurgensen registered a game-high five points on four goals and one assist to lead second-seeded Creighton Prep to a 10-3 victory over third-seeded Papillion LaVista in a Nebraska High School Lacrosse Association semifinal Thursday night at Tranquility Park in Omaha.
Junior middie Billy Dineen added four points on three goals and one assist, and senior attackman Brennen Killen scored three goals, as the Junior Jays (17-2) advanced to the state championship game for the fifth straight season.
Creighton Prep will be going for its four championship in the five seasons that there has been competitive lacrosse in the state. Creighton Prep won titles in 2008, 2006 and 2005. The only other team to take it was Millard West, which beat the Junior Jays in the 2007 championship game.
In the regular season, the teams split a pair of games, with Creighton Prep taking the first meeting, 8-7, on March 21 and Millard West winning the second, 8-5, on April 4.
The championship game will be played Friday night, May 15, at 8 p.m., CDT, at Tranquility Park.
“It’s going to come down to execution,” Creighton Prep head coach Steve Haney said. “We both have high-powered offenses. The little things are going to be important.”
On Thursday, junior goalie Chris Feldman saved seven shots to lead Creighton Prep’s defense, which held Papillion LaVista to 10 shots on goal.
In defeat, senior attackman Mitch Killian scored twice for the Monarchs (9-8).
In the second game of a semifinal doubleheader, Creighton Prep led 4-1 at the end of the first quarter, 8-2 at halftime and 9-2 at the end of the third quarter.
“I think we played very sharp,” Haney said. “We concentrated on ground balls and winning face-offs. We just tried to keep the offensive pressure on Papio.”
