Sophomore attackman Jeff Smith scored a game-high two goals to lead Corona del Sol to a 5-4 victory over Desert Vista in an Arizona Youth Lacrosse League Division I game Tuesday night.

Junior middie Cody Wagner, senior middie Austin Thibault and junior middie Andrew Bock all added single goals to help the Aztecs (2-0) win their second straight. Ryan Thibault and Scott Caruso both had an assist to round out the offense.

Defensively, junior goalie Brandon Moreno saved six shots for Corona del Sol.

In defeat, attackman Chad Hyslop finished with a team-high two points on a goal and an assist for Desert Vista (0-1), which lost its season opener.

In a tight defensive battle, Desert Vista led 2-1 at the end of the first quarter, and the game was tied, 3-3, at halftime.

The teams traded goals to start the second half to make it 4-4, and Wagner broke the tie when he scored the go-ahead goal with 1:22 remaining in the third quarter. The teams then played more than 13 minutes of scoreless lacrosse to end the game.

“It was a good win for us early in the season,” Corona del Sol assistant coach Cliff Prausa said. “We really liked the way the guys responded after falling behind.”
