TEX GIRLS: Coppell Wins Division II State Championship
Sophomore middie Lexus DeLoach scored a game-high seven goals to lead top-seeded Coppell to a 12-7 victory over second-seeded St. Agnes Academy in the Texas Girls High School Lacrosse League Division II state championship game Sunday morning at the Episcopal School of Dallas.
Sophomore middie Erin O’Brien added five points on three goals and two assists to help the Cowgirls win their first state championship in program history. Coppell won the Division II title in its first-ever trip to the state tournament despite having just one senior on its roster.
“It’s huge for us,” Coppell head coach Jennifer Turner said. “We’ve always had good teams. We have a very strong sophomore class, and winning state will give them the momentum and enthusiasm to carry on to their junior year. If they keep up their hard work, we should have a very good year next year.”
Sophomore attack Chelsea Beaulne and sophomore middie Brooke Bolling each added a pair of goals to round out the scoring for Coppell.
Defensively, junior goalies Brittany Rutherford and Anna Barnett both had big games in the cage.
St. Agnes Academy (8-7), which is in its first season as a varsity program, had its five-game winning streak snapped. But despite the loss, the Tigers made their mark this year, winning the South District Division II title and reaching the Division II state-title game by beating several far more established programs.
On Sunday, Coppell raced to a 6-2 halftime lead and maintained a comfortable advantage throughout the second half.
“We played our best game ever,” Turner said. “Everyone played well. We’ve had games were everybody played well as individuals but not as a team. Today, we came together.”
