TEX BOYS: Coppell Decisively Wins Div. II State Championship
Senior attackman Peter Travis and sophomore attackman Trent Dennington each registered a co-game-high seven points to lead Coppell to a 22-4 victory over Stony Point in the Texas High School Lacrosse League Division II state championship game Sunday afternoon.
Dennington and Travis both scored five goals and dished two assists to lead the Cowboys (14-3) to their first state title.
“They did what was asked of them,” Coppell head coach Gary Dennington said. “We put in new things, one piece at a time, and they believed in it and believed in themselves. They brought it together the last four games and took care of business.”
Sophomore middie Tyler Landis, who Gary Dennington called the leader of his team, added five points on four goals and one assist. Junior attackman Travis DeSerrano scored four goals for Coppell, which started the day by polishing off its state semifinal victory.
Coppell led Memorial, 9-2, at halftime Saturday when the semifinal was suspended because of weather. The teams came together Sunday morning to play the second half, and the Cowboys eventually won, 20-7.
The championship game didn’t start quite so smoothly for Coppell. Stony Point freshman attackman Conor Schindel scored off the opening face-off to give the Tigers (13-5) a 1-0 lead just 12 seconds into the game.
But it was all Coppell from there. The Cowboys reeled off seven straight goals to take a 7-1 lead at the end of the first quarter, and Coppell led 13-3 at halftime and 17-4 going into the final 12 minutes.
“We’re always a little shaky in the first two minutes,” Gary Dennington said. “But we showed a lot of maturity. We took the game over.”
In defeat, sophomore middie Brad Johnson, junior middie Brendan Schindel, Conor Schindel and senior middie Matt Moreno all scored once for Stony Point, which was making its first appearance in a state championship game.
“They were a fantastic team,” Stony Point head coach Jamie Booth said. “They were big, fast, strong and they moved the ball very well.”
