ORE-WASH BOYS: Churchill Nips Tahoma in Nail Biter, 11-10

March 13th, 2010

Junior attackman Brandon Determan registered a game-high six points on five goals and one assist to lead Churchill to a come-from-behnd, 11-10 victory over Tahoma in an Oregon vs. Washington interstate game Friday night south of the border.

Junior attackman Ben Conway added four points on three goals and one assist, and senior attackman Georg Gold scored two critical fourth-quarter to help the Lancers (1-0) win their season opener.

Sophomore middie Kyle Salisbury had a goal to round out the offense for Churchill.

Defensively, junior goalie Montana Ostrander saved 12 shots.

Tahoma (0-1) lost its season opener after it led by two heading into the fourth quarter.

Churchill led 3-2 at the end of the first quarter and 4-3 at halftime before Tahoma exploded for seven goals in the third quarter. Tahoma led 10-8 going into the final 12 minutes, but it couldn’t hold on to the lead.

Conway scored 39 seconds into the fourth quarter to pull the Lancers within 10-9, Gold drew Churchill level with 8:30 to play, and it was Gold, once again, scoring with 4:01 remaining to give the Lancers an 11-10 lead.

Ostrander then made two huge saves down the stretch to keep Churchill in front.

“I’m very pleased with the effort we gave,” Churchill head coach Jay Dodge said. “We made a lot of early-season mistakes, but we hustled hard and we never quit.”
