ORE BOYS: OHSLA Playoffs: Churchill Eliminates Wilson, 9-7

May 22nd, 2009

Senior middie Patrick San Jose registered a game-high five points on two goals and three assists to lead Churchill to a 9-7 victory over Wilson in an Oregon High School Lacrosse Association first-round playoff game Thursday night.

Senior middie Brendan Yu added four points on three goals and one assist to help the Lancers (15-3) advance to the second round.

Churchill will next face Metro Conference champion Sunset on Wednesday, May 27, at 7:30 p.m., PDT. The teams did not meet during the regular season.

“We’re just going to have to go out and play as hard as we can and play four quarters of lacrosse,” Churchill head coach Jay Lodge said. “They’re one of the best teams in the state. We expect them to play hard and play physical. They’re going to be a handful for us.”

On Thursday, sophomore attackman Brandon Determan, sophomore middie Riley Kulm and senior middie John Cooley all added a goal and an assist for Churchill, which has won seven straight. Sophomore attackman Ben Conway scored once to round out the offense.

Defensively, sophomore goalie Montana Ostrander saved nine shots.

Churchill led 6-1 at the end of the first quarter, 7-3 at halftime and 9-5 at the end of the third quarter before holding on down the stretch.

“We started off really well,” Dodge said. “We really fought hard in the second half.”

In defeat, senior attackman Colin Jones and senior middie Eric Wittkop both had a co-team-high three points on a goal and two assists.

Defensively, Wittkop picked up eight ground balls, and senior goalie Austin Alleman saved 17 shots for Wilson, which finished the season 9-8.

“I did not think we played well,” Wilson head coach Doug Foster said. “We made a lot of mental mistakes, and Churchill simply outhustled us.”
