COL GIRLS: CHSAA Semifinals: Cherry Creek Routs Columbine

May 22nd, 2010

Senior attack Kameryn Downing registered a game-high 12 points on eight goals and four assists to lead No. 1 Cherry Creek to a 28-9 victory over No. 16 Columbine in a Colorado High School Activities Association semifinal Saturday afternoon at the University of Denver.

Senior middie Shelby Barrett added eight points on six goals and two assists, and sophomore middie Anya Gersoff finished with eight points on two goals and six assists to help the top-seeded Bruins (18-0) win their 18th straight and advance to the state championship game for the 14th straight season.

Cherry Creek will go for its ninth state title when it faces the winner of Saturday afternoon’s Denver East-Kent Denver semifinal on Wednesday, May 26, at 7 p.m., MDT, at the University of Denver.

“It doesn’t matter who we play,” Cherry Creek head coach Cayel Dwyer said. “We’re going to have to continue our string of playing solid, complete games or we’re going to lose.”

On Saturday, senior middie Annie Anton added seven points on two goals and five assists, and junior middie Kiki Boone finished with six points on five goals and one assist for the Bruins.

In defeat, Annie Larson scored a team-high five goals for fourth-seeded Columbine, which had its 17-game winning streak snapped and finished the season 17-1.

The game was tied, 4-4, early in the first half before Cherry Creek broke it open with a 15-2 run. The Bruins led 19-6 at halftime and then rolled in the second half.

“We’ve put together a string of some pretty good games, and this is the best we’ve had so far,” Dwyer said. “We were able to win the draws and have a little bit of patience on offense.”
