COL BOYS: Chatfield Upsets No. 8 Kent Denver in Final Second

March 11th, 2010

Senior middie Greg Kelsic scored the game-winning goal with one second remaining to give Chatfield an 8-7 upset victory over No. 8 Kent Denver in a Colorado High School Activities Association game Wednesday.

Kelsic took a feed about four yards off the crease from junior attackman Hayden Kammerzell before firing the ball in just before the horn sounded to give the Chargers (3-0) their most significant win in program history. Kelsic finished with a team-high four points on two goals and two assists, and he also picked up 10 ground balls to lead Chatfield.

Senior attackman Trace Wollner scored three goals, senior middie Eli Greenspan added a pair and senior middie James Sharp finished with a goal and an assist to round out the offense.

Defensively, senior goalie Connor Lewis saved eight shots.

In defeat, George Woodward scored a game-high four goals, Matt Florence and Sam Bauer each had a goal and an assist, and Will Horne scored once for Kent Denver, which fell to 1-1.

In the cage, junior goalie Sam Van Hook made 15 saves.

In a back-and-forth game, Kent Denver led 2-1 at the end of the first quarter, the game was tied, 3-3, at halftime and Chatfield led 6-4 going into the final 12 minutes.

Kent Denver reeled off three straight goals to take a 7-6 lead in the fourth, but Chatfield answered when Sharp scored the equalizer late in regulation. That set the stage for Kelsic, who made a great cut to the cage to shake his defender before taking the feed from Kammerzell.

“It’s a confidence builder, more than anything else,” Chatfield head coach Kyle Lambert said. “It shows we belong in the conversation with the top six.”
