AZ BOYS: Chaparral, No. 24 Brophy Prep Advance to Semis
May 5th, 2010
It will be Chaparral vs. Brophy Prep in the Arizona Youth Lacrosse League Division I playoffs once again. Except, this year, they will play one round early.
On Tuesday, senior attackman Kyle Mason registered a game-high five points on four goals and one assist to lead the fourth-seeded Firebirds to a 12-6 victory over Tucson Tanque Verde in a quarterfinal game that was not as close as the final score indicates.
Senior attackman Jeff Petznick added four points on a goal and three assists, sophomore attackman Ryan Erickson had three points on two goals and one assist and senior middie Craig Erickson scored twice for Chaparral (12-3).
The Firebirds and Broncos have met in the last four state championship games, with each team winning twice. But this season, they will meet in the semifinals, with Chaparral going for its ninth straight trip to the championship game and Brophy Prep going for its fifth straight trip.
In the teams’ only regular-season contest, Chaparral dealt Brophy Prep its only in-state loss of the season, 8-7, on April 22.
“We know it’s going to be a tough match-up,” Chaparral head coach Jeff Guy said. “We’re going to just have to prepare the right way in the next couple days of practice.”
On Tuesday, senior middie Ethan Freedman, junior defenseman Jake Bolwar and sophomore middie James ‘Finn’ Wells all scored once to round out the Chaparral offense.
In the cage, sophomore goalie Tanner Waggoner saved 11 shots.
Fifth-seeded Tucson Tanque Verde finished its most successful season in Division I at 9-6.
Chaparral led 6-0 at the end of the first quarter and 10-0 at halftime before taking its foot off the gas in the second half.
“Our guys came out on fire and took it to the goal hard,” Guy said. “We finished our shots and played smart.”
No. 24 BROPHY PREP 11, GILBERT 3
Sophomore middie Brock Ghelfi and senior attackman Adam Fishman each registered a co-game-high five points to lead the top-seeded Broncos into the state semifinals.
Ghelfi finished with three goals and two assists, and Fishman had two goals and three assists, as the Broncos (16-2) won for the sixth time in their last seven games. Andrew Fennessy added four points on two goals and two assists, and Kevin Murney scored three goals.
In defeat, Ian Harris, Sean Harris and Dustin Anderson all scored once, and Justin Garrison, Joe Nagel and Samuel Catour all had an assist for eighth-seeded Gilbert, which finished the season 6-9.
In the cage, Gilbert goalie Kevin Lessard saved 10 shots.
Brophy Prep led 6-1 at the end of the first quarter, 8-1 at halftime and 10-1 going into the final 12 minutes.
