AZ BOYS: Chandler Edges Improved Gilbert in Nail Biter, 10-9

March 17th, 2010

Sophomore attackman Sean LaFlam, senior middie Michael Giffen and senior attackman Andrew Muscara all registered a co-game-high four points to lead Chandler to a 10-9 victory over Gilbert in an Arizona Youth Lacrosse League Division I game Tuesday afternoon.

LaFlam and Giffen each finished with three goals and an assist, and Muscara had a goal and three assists, as the Wolves (3-1) won their second straight.

Junior middie Brandon Moranz added a goal and an assist, and junior middie David Villa and sophomore attackman Jonah Woessner each scored once to round out the Chandler offense.

Defensively, senior goalie Brian LaFlam saved 13 shots, and he stood on his head down the stretch.

“He basically won the game for us,” Chandler head coach Dave Henning said of Brian LaFlam.

In defeat, Zach Payne scored a game-high four goals for Gilbert (1-1), which continues to show it has improved dramatically this season.

Chandler led 2-1 at the end of the first quarter, 5-4 at halftime and 8-7 going into the fourth quarter.

Villa scored his only goal with 5:53 remaining in regulation to put Chandler ahead, 10-8. Gilbert cut the deficit back to one when Joey Nagel scored with 4:46 to play. However, it was all about Brian LaFlam in the final four minutes.

Brian LaFlam made multiple stops to keep Chandler in front, including one spectacular one-on-one save off a shot from point-blank range.

“I don’t think we played particularly well,” Henning said. “Gilbert hustled more than we did, but I was happy to get the win on a day in which we didn’t play our best.”

Coach's addendum

Brian was definitely instrumental in the win with crazy saves and a hockey assist.

Muscara was something like 16 of 18 faceoffs.  That clearly had an impact on the outcome.
