ID BOYS: TVLL Semifinals: Centennial Rocks Meridian, 13-4
May 15th, 2009
Senior attackman Zach Hall registered a game-high five points on four goals and one assist to lead second-seeded Centennial to a 13-4 victory over third-seeded Meridian in a Treasure Valley Lacrosse League semifinal Thursday.
Sophomore attackman Andrew Fletcher added four points on two goals and two assists, and junior middie Dallin Wilkes had four points on a goal and three assists to help the three-time defending TVLL champion Patriots advance to their fifth straight league championship game.
Centennial will next face top-seeded Timberline, which beat fifth-seeded Boise, 12-10, in Thursday’s other semifinals. The TVLL championship game will be played Saturday, May 16, at 6 p.m., MDT, at Eagle High School.
This will be the fourth time in the last five years that Centennial and Timberline have met to determine the Boise-area champion. In the teams’ only regular-season meeting, Timberline won 9-7 on April 25.
“It’s going to be a tough game,” Centennial head coach John Andrysiak said. “They’re a really good team. They move the ball well and possess the ball very well. We have to play our defense the right way, and we have to possess the ball. If we possess the ball, it will give us a chance.”
On Thursday, senior middie Kyle Olsen added three goals, senior middie Colin Ryan had three points on a goal and two assists and senior middies Mike Knuchell and Garrett Kyle each had a goal to round out the offense for Centennial (15-2).
Defensively, senior goalie Brandon Wheedon saved nine shots.
In defeat, Austin Mendiola scored a team-high three goals for Meridian, which finished the season 12-5.
Centennial led 4-1 at the end of the first quarter, 11-3 at halftime and 11-4 going into the fourth quarter.
“I felt like we came out with our intensity really high,” Andrysiak said. “We were really aggressive, and that eventually pushed us to the win.”
