NEV BOYS: SNLA Semifinals: Centennial Downs Henderson
May 19th, 2010
Senior attackman Cody Milligan registered a game-high seven points on six goals and one assist to lead third-seeded Centennial to an 18-12 victory over second-seeded Henderson in a Southern Nevada Lacrosse Association Division I semifinal Tuesday.
Sophomore attackman Brandon Krowicki added five goals to help the Bulldogs (13-4) avenge two regular-season losses to Henderson and advance to the league championship game for the first time since 2006.
Centennial will next face No. 8 Palo Verde, the tournament’s top seed, in the SNLA Division I title game Friday night at 8 p.m., PDT, at Viper Park in Las Vegas. Centennial is the only team that has beaten Palo Verde (20-1) this season.
“I knew before the season that we should definitely be there in the end,” Centennial head coach Tank Thomas said. “These guys know when we come to play we’re tough to stop. I’m looking forward to Friday and hopefully bringing the championship back to the northwest part of the valley.”
On Tuesday, senior middie Sean Ferreiro scored three goals, senior middie Brandon Krowicki had three points on two goals and one assist and junior middie Joey Mecham had a goal and an assist for the Bulldogs. Eighth-grade middie Justin Anderson scored once to round out the offense.
Defensively, sophomore goalie Mitch Dunbar saved 11 shots.
Henderson had its four-game winning streak snapped and finished the season 12-3.
Henderson led 5-4 at the end of the first quarter, but Centennial took over from there. The Bulldogs led 10-6 at halftime and 15-10 going into the final 12 minutes.
“The guys came to play,” Thomas said. “We had a lot of heart and determination. We dictated what happened with this game, and we played with poise. That’s what I’ve been looking for from these guys all year.”
