COL GIRLS: Centaurus Upsets No. 12 Heritage/Littleton in OT

March 12th, 2010

Senior attack Lissy McNiece scored the go-ahead goal in the first half of non-sudden-death overtime to lead Centaurus to a thrilling, 15-14 upset victory over No. 12 Heritage/Littleton in a Colorado High School Activities Association game Thursday night.

McNiece scored her fifth goal of the game to give the Warriors (2-0) a lead they would not relinquish. Centaurus held on to its slim one-goal advantage throughout the entire second half of overtime.

Sophomore middie Emma Lazaroff registered a game-high six points on five goals and one assist, senior middie Megan Gosselin had three points on a goal and two assists and senior attack Emily Carlin scored twice to help Centaurus score the most significant win in program history.

Junior attack Gabby Wallace and junior middie Taylor Fromme both added single goals to round out the offense for the Warriors.

In defeat, Hannah Annalora scored four goals and dished an assist, and Anna Salemo scored four goals for Heritage/Littleton (0-1), which lost a heartbreaker in its season opener.

Heritage/Littleton led 8-7 at halftime, and the game was tied, 14-14, at the end of regulation.

“It’s exciting and thrilling and I’m so proud of my girls,” Centaurus head coach Genny Horning said. “We’ve been working so hard, and we really came out and did everything on the field that we’ve been doing in practice.”
