AZ BOYS: Catalina Foothills Wins AYLL Division II State Title

May 15th, 2010

Junior attackman Ian Brewer scored a game-high four goals to lead Catalina Foothills to a 10-5 victory over Notre Dame Prep in the Arizona Youth Lacrosse League Division II state championship game Friday night at Chaparral High School.

Junior middie Adam DeLuca added four points on two goals and two assists to help the Falcons (13-1) win their first state championship.

“It’s been a long time coming,” Catalina Foothills head coach Matt Hourigan said. “We’ve been building for the last four years. It’s a special testament to our seniors, who pretty much started the program. And here they are, winning a championship four years later.”

Senior attackman Casey Borden and sophomore middie Charles Yarrington each finished with a goal and an assist, and senior attackman Keenan Anderson and senior middie Sohan Bose both had a goal to round out the offense.

In defeat, sophomore attackman Connor Koper scored twice, and junior attackman Korey Jones, junior middie Kobey Jones and sophomore middie Riley Spencer all had a goal for Notre Dame Prep, which finished the season 11-3.

“They executed their offense, and we didn’t,” Notre Dame Prep head coach Nick Protopopoff said. “That’s all it is, basically. They found their open men, we didn’t stop it, and we just seemed a little flat-footed on the offensive side.”

Catalina Foothills got off to a quick start, taking a 4-0 lead at the end of the first quarter, and the Falcons never allowed Notre Dame Prep to get back in the game. Catalina Foothills led 5-2 at halftime and 8-3 at the end of the third quarter.

“Our defense was more than solid, and our goalie set the tone in the first quarter with a huge save on a one-on-one breakaway,” Hourigan said. “We didn’t look back.”
