NorCAL-SoCAL GIRLS: Carondelet Spoils Poway's Opener, 7-6

March 13th, 2010

Senior attack Emily DeSimone and junior middie Hannah Cooper each scored a co-game-high three goals to lead unbeaten Carondelet to a 7-6 victory over Poway in a California Interscholastic Federation game Friday afternoon.

Junior attack Kayla Hammergren also scored once to help the Cougars (4-0) win their fourth straight to start the season.

Carondelet, of Northern California, was playing the first of a two-game weekend road trip to the San Diego area. The Cougars will next face No. 6 Torrey Pines on Saturday.

On Friday, Christa Morgan registered a game-high five points on three goals and two assists in a losing effort for the Titans (0-1), who dropped their season opener.

Carondelet started strong, scoring the game’s first three goals to take an early lead. Poway fought back and closed within 5-4 by halftime, but the Cougars scored back-to-back goals to start the second half and restore their three-goal edge.

DeSimone scored her third with 17:10 remaining to put Carondelet ahead, 7-4.

Poway answered with back-to-back goals with 8:43 and 3:20 remaining in regulation, but the Titans could not score an equalizer to force overtime.

“It was an exciting game,” Carondelet head coach Rick Jeffery said. “They were the toughest team we’ve played so far this year.”
