CIF-Southern Section (Preseason #1: Foothill-Orange County)

January 18th, 2010

CIF-SOUTHERN SECTION BOYS

The Team to Beat: Foothill-Orange County

The three-time defending Southern Section champion Knights are the class of the region once again. Foothill-OC is the only champion in the history of the CIF-Southern Section, and early indications are that trend will continue for a fourth straight season.

The Knights strength will be on the offensive side of the ball, where all three of the team’s starting attackmen return. In all, Foothill-OC brings back six starters, including one each in the midfield, on defense and in the cage.

Foothill-OC will be led by junior attackman Cameron Cole, senior attackman Taylor DeBerry and senior attackman Tucker Rowe, who will combine to form the most intimidating attack unit in the area. The talent level doesn’t drop off too far throughout the rest of the lineup, and look for junior middie Cooper Pickell to also be a big contributor.

Contenders: Palos Verdes, St. Margaret’s Episcopal, Mira Costa, Corona del Mar, Santa Margarita Catholic

With nine returning starters, Palos Verdes is set for a return to prominence. The Sea Kings, who won the Northern Division title in 2008 and 2007, have all their big guns coming back. Palos Verdes will be led by Providence-bound senior defenseman Zach Rogers, two-time All-Bay League senior goalie Matt Schladen and last year’s leading scorer, senior attackman Brandon Lim. Sophomore speedsters Zach Henkhaus and Zach Fixen will be impact players in the midfield and at attack, respectively.

St. Margaret’s Episcopal brings back seven starters, including two at attack, two in the midfield and two on defense. With that kind of experience spread throughout the lineup, the Tartans are looking at perhaps their best team in several years. Senior goalie Jeff Askin will be a four-year starter, and senior attackman Johnny Murayama led the Tartans in scoring last season. Senior defenseman Chris Adams, sophomore middie Chris Bauer and sophomore middie Matt Duenes are also top players.

Defending Bay League champion Mira Costa brings back five starters who will be on a mission after blowing it in the Northern Division championship game last year. Mira Costa has several of its top players back, and it will be in a fierce battle with Palos Verdes for the league and the regional title. Junior middie Tom Farrell and senior defenseman Cole Russert were both first-team All-Bay League selections last year. Senior attackman Nick de la Espriella and sophomore attackman Dakota Randall made the second-team All-Bay League list.

Corona del Mar may have missed its big chance to knock off Foothill-OC last season, but the Sea Kings do return half their starting lineup, with two attackmen, one first-line middie and two defensemen back in the fold. Notre Dame-bound senior attackman Ryan Mix is unquestionably the leader of this group, and he’ll get plenty of help from junior defenseman Donald Dalton, senior defenseman Alex Mainthow, senior middie Daniel Noto and senior attackman Randall Nelson.

Santa Margarita Catholic has good depth, with the core of the team being sophomores and juniors, and the Eagles will be a bolstered by three sophomore transfers: attackman Griffin Foster from Beckman, middie Connor Ebner from St. Margaret’s and defenseman/long-stick middie Josh Kang from St. Margaret’s. Mesa State-bound senior middie Jordan Lievois and Mesa State bound senior long-stick middie Justin Malloy will team with sophomore goalie Ronnie Pisano and junior middie Cory Thomson to make a formidable group.

Sleeper: Harvard-Westlake

This will likely be the best Wolverines team in school history, and they very well could make a run at the Northern Division title. Harvard-Westlake has two returning first-team All-Mission League selections in Hamilton-bound senior goalie Barrett Meister and Bowdoin-bound senior middie Connor O’Toole. On top of that, the Wolverines also bring back three more players who were named second-team All-Mission League in 2009. They are junior attackman Cory Wizenberg, senior middie Joe Edwards and senior long-stick middie Riley Mate.

Lacrosse Season:
2010

it was a scrimmage

HW beat cdm in a scrimmage... just a scrimmage

HW underrated

HW just beat CDM 8-6....watch out, they're a force

corona del mar

no one has accounted for the fact that G.W. Mix is ow the skipper at CdM and he will have that program running like a champion by the time the season starts. he is a no bullshit, dont waste my time, do-what-I-say or get off my feild, kind of coach and he will lead that team deep into the playoffs

HW beat CDM today, how do you

HW beat CDM today, how do you like dem apples?

well then...

HW is 0-2. CDM is 1-0. feel free to explain

why is palos verdes getting way more hype than m costa?

bs

Los Alamitos should be on the contender list.. not even a question

LOS AL?????? please-------

Los AL cant catch and throw.  They lost every good player.  They will be lucky to go .500

i wonder if this guy goes to foothill??

los al is better than you think

if you say that los al lost every player then your just stupid

will win 10+ games this year AT LEAST.

Foothill

yeaahhh

Knights

No one will even touch Foothill this year.  They walked away with it lasy year, and the ywill do the same for the 4th time this year.

CDM, Sanat margarita, Los AL, EL toro, ST Margs

You guys suck

eh, don't get cocky...

I'm not gunna stoop to your level and just start saying everybody sucks.  But Foothill did not walk away easy last year - ET repeatedly kept the games within a goal; one game Foothill only managed to win in the final seconds.

I won't even go so far as to say that Foothill won't win again this year, (maybe they will) but you can't think Foothill's gunna have it easy.  They're the team to beat this year, and everybody's gunna be gunnin' for 'em.

(BTW - learn to type.  It's hard to read with that many typos)

Biased?

How do you not include any of the talented Brentwood players??? They throw Loyola, Crespi, HW, and Chaminade players on that top players list that aren't as good as Brentwood's Ben Green, Evan Morris, Tyler Coleman, and Mikey Berman.

mannnn brentwood is knarly!

did they just beat culver city AND palisades by one!! what quality wins

brentwood? really?

if brentwood is so good then why did chaminade beat them 14-6?

brentwood isnt good

people don't care about brentwood because they have never beaten loyola,hw,or chaminade.  for example chaminade beat them twice last year the 1st time at chaminade when their head coach didn't get their til the 2nd quarter because their AD, now at brentwood, failed to tell the coach the game time changed and then chaminade beat them at brentwood when brentwood played their best game of the season and chaminade their worst

Brentwood

Brentwood has been terrible for the past 3 years. Where are ben green, tyler coleman evan morris and mikey berman going to college if theyre so good? Maybe the reason those guys are on the top of the list because they get actual looks from schools.

And who would you be talking about "Loyola, Crespi, HW, and Chaminade players on that top players list that aren't as good as Brentwood's" exactly?

Brentwood's finest

Evan Morris committed to Union after turning down offers from tufts, deleware, and wesleyan. Ben Green is deciding between yale, dartmouth, and trinity. Tyler Coleman committed to Penn after turning down Villanova. Mikey Berman has offers from Robert Morris, Rutgers, Amherst, and Connecticut College. So you see, they obviously do have some talented players...

define offers and

define offers and commitments... cuz last i checked, ben green tore his acl and is a head case, tyler, you suck, and evan morris is the only one who actually is going to school for lax.

maybe brentwoods "finest" isnt good enough...

no subject

haha this is evan you go to chaminade right? and ben green is already running again fyi...

lets break this down for you big guy

offer:to give, make , or promise something (such as a spot on a lacrosse team?)

ex: The Coach offered me a spot on their team.

Brentwood?

So if Brentwood is so good, how come when it comes to league they can't win???Beat by Chaminade and Harvard Westlake.
