LOU BOYS: Brother Martin Scores Big Win over Ocean Springs
Brother Martin head coach Billy Kirkikis said his team has circled the Ocean Springs game on its calendar since the Crusaders lost twice to the Greyhounds early last season.
What a difference a year has made.
Standout senior attackman Walker Kirkikis registered a game-high eight points on four goals and four assists to lead Brother Martin to a stunning, 12-1 victory over Ocean Springs in a Louisiana High School Lacrosse League game Saturday morning, a result that shows the Crusaders are here to compete in 2010.
“We knew we had to get better, and we did,” Brother Martin head coach Billy Kirkikis said. “Our seniors really stepped up their game and took control in the first half. We’re looking forward to the Sugar Bowl next weekend and then getting back into league action the following week.”
Senior attackman Jordan Ramirez added four goals, sophomore middie Donald Davis scored three times and senior middie Taylor Meyer finished with a goal and an assist for Brother Martin (1-0), which looked to be in mid-season form during its season opener.
Defensively, senior goalie Mitch Rogers saved 13 shots.
In defeat, senior attackman Bryce Shepard scored the only goal for Ocean Springs, which fell to 1-2.
Brother Martin raced to a 5-1 lead by the end of the first quarter, an advantage it extended to 7-1 by halftime and 9-1 by the end of the third quarter.
“Our kids have been looking forward to playing Ocean Springs since last year’s games,” said Billy Kirkikis, whose team lost 8-3 and 6-4 to the Greyhounds in 2009.
“Our team passed the ball very well, and we got some good looks at the goal for some great shots.”
