AZ HS: Brophy Prep Senior Robert Mayasich Critically Injured
March 1st, 2010
Brophy Prep senior attackman Robert Mayasich has been critically injured after being hit by a car, and his prospects for survival are slim.
Mayasich, 18, was running in a long-distance relay race when he was hit Saturday, according to numerous news reports in Arizona. Mayasich was struck in the westbound lane of State Route 74 about halfway between U.S. 60 and Interstate 17 at 1:30 a.m., according to the East Valley Tribune.
He was taking part in a 202-mile relay race between Prescott and Tempe as part of a 12-member team, and not all roads on the route were closed to traffic.
Mayasich suffered severe head trauma, and he is likely not going to recover, Brophy Prep lacrosse board member Jim Fishman said.
“It’s just a devastating injury,” Fishman said. “It really hits close to home. I wish it had a silver lining, but it doesn’t look like that’s going to be the case.”
Brophy Prep is scheduled to open the season Wednesday night at Desert Mountain, and Fishman said that as of right now that game will go on as planned.
Fishman described Mayasich as an intelligent young man who was waiting to hear from the admissions departments at several Ivy League universities.
“He was very genuine,” Fishman said. “He had a very good wit. He was just very sincere and very bright.”
Mayasich was cut from the Brophy Prep varsity team last season as a junior. But after working on his game, he made the team this year and scored several goals during the Broncos preseason games.
“He did not give up,” Fishman said. “He hung in there. He showed he had the ability to be on the field and contribute.”
